OLYMPICS August 24, 2008  The closing ceremonies of the Summer Olympics in Beijing, China take place after 16 days of tournaments. Nearly 11,000 athletes representing 204 nations competed in 28 different sports. The Games brake an all-time television viewership record with 4.7 billion people tuning in, or 2/3 of the world’s population.

GOLF August 23, 1998  Coming off his win at the PGA Championship only a week earlier, Vijay Singh swings into another Tour victory at the Sprint International in Castle Rock, Colorado. Over the course of his career, the Fiji-born golfer won ‘Rookie of The Year’ in 1993 and has claimed three majors: PGA Championship (1998, 2004) and Masters Tournament (2000).

BOXING August 23, 1988  Mike Tyson gets into a street brawl in Harlem, New York with fellow heavyweight boxer, Mitch Green. The incident takes place at 4 am outside a clothing store with varying descriptions of the event. Beaten by Tyson in the ring 2 years earlier, Green expressed his anger at being short-changed, which led to a scuffle and fist fight.

40 years ago

BASKETBALL August 23, 1978  Future NBA star Kobe Bryant is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The 5x champion skipped college and went directly into professional basketball from high school. One of the greatest in the game, Bryant played 20 years with the LA Lakers and retired in 2016 with 33,643 points (avg 25 ppg).
