FOOTBALL September 14, 2008  In week 2 of the NFL, the Indianapolis Colts defeat the Minneapolis Vikings 18-15. Colts QB Peyton Manning led his team back from a 15-0 deficit and then Adam Vinatieri booted a 47-yard field goal to take the lead and the game. Both teams made the playoffs that year, but neither advanced past the Wild Card games.

AUTO RACING September 13, 1998  Michael Schumacher wins the Italian Grand Prix, beating Eddie Irvine who came in 2nd and his own brother, Ralf Schumacher, who placed 3rd; it was the first time in F1 history that two brothers shared the podium. With 86 pts at season’s end, Michael lost the championship to Mika Hakinnen who finished with 100.

OLYMPICS September 15, 1988  Lillehammer, Norway is selected over Anchorage, Alaska to host the 1994 Winter Olympics. The Games were the second winter competitions to take place in the Scandinavian nation, with the first being the 1952 Olympics held in Oslo. The other cities that lost the 1994 bid were Ostersund, Austria and Sofia, Bulgaria.

TENNIS September 10, 1978  Jimmy Connors defeats Bjorn Borg at the US Open 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 to become the first player to win the American tournament on 3 different surfaces- grass, clay and hard. It was the first time the US Open was played at the National Tennis Center after moving from the West Side Tennis Club where the event had been held since 1915.
